Where To Stay While House Hunting
If you’re relocating to San Antonio without a permanent residence in place, you’ll need somewhere to hang your hat for a while. The obvious solution is to stay at a hotel, but that’s usually the most expensive option by far. Some hotels may offer a favorable weekly rate, but likely increase double to quadruple the normal rate on weekends. Special events and conventions also drive prices up even during weekdays and cause hotels to temporarily rescind their discounts for staying for a full week.
Real Estate Muses share the following options for places to stay while house hunting in San Antonio.
These are hotels that cater almost exclusively to guests who are paying by the week or by the month. The bulk of the guests are usually people traveling for work, but you will also sometimes see families in transition living at these chains for a time. You can expect a hotel environment, but usually with a kitchen and a set of cookware provided in the room, and housekeeping provided only once or twice per week unless you are staying at one of the priciest chains.
Some of the largest chains of this nature are Extended Stay America, Staybridge Suites, Marriott Residence Inn and Studio 6. WoodSpring Suites is an extended-stay hotel near Fort Sam Houston for military families house hunting before an upcoming PCS.
Airbnb in San Antonio allows property owners to rent a variety of non-traditional accommodations. If you are happy with a single private room in a shared house, this is often by far the most inexpensive option, with rates that beat even the weekly rates of budget hotels. Of course, everything from full apartments to entire houses are available for rent through this service.
VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner)
This service is quite similar to Airbnb, but as the name indicates, the focus is more specifically on vacation rentals. It is particularly popular for by-the-week rentals of more homey accommodations than a hotel room, however.
Corporate housing services differ from extended stay hotels in that they offer lodging in an apartment complex or condominium rather than a hotel room. These are usually located in residential areas and cater mostly to people who are relocating to San Antonio for business or who are on temporary business for a period of months. Often they will only rent by the month, but there are some exceptions that rent by the week.
All of these options are often more affordable than hotels are, and also usually offer more amenities. Most have some sort of kitchen available as well, which both brings down the food bill and makes healthy eating much easier.
